As winter arrives, lower temperatures can challenge the performance of gas generators. To ensure your units operate safely, efficiently, and reliably through the cold months, we’ve prepared this winter maintenance guide. Let’s dive in:

1. Gas Pipeline Insulation

Gas inevitably contains moisture, which can be easily drained in the summer through the drainage outlet. However, in winter, these outlets can freeze, potentially obstructing the flow. To prevent this, it is essential to install heat trace cables along the pipes and insulate them with a thick layer of material to prevent heat loss. This will ensure that the condensate in the gas can be drained effectively.

2. Insulate Compressed Air Lines

With a diameter of just 10mm, compressed air lines are susceptible to freezing, which can block airflow and disrupt control components. Use heating wires (≤5mm) parallel to the air lines and insulate them with foam cotton (10mm diameter) to prevent the water in the lines from freezing and blocking the air flow.

3. Increase Lubricating Oil Temperature

As temperatures drop, the viscosity of lubricating oil increases, which can impair lubrication and damage the oil pump. Be sure to activate the cylinder water heater and ensure the temperature rises above 10°C. Regularly start the pre-lubrication oil pump to warm the oil, reducing its viscosity and improving lubrication efficiency.

4. Check Gas Butterfly Valves

The gas butterfly valve plays a critical role in safety. During winter, water tends to accumulate at the bottom of the valve, potentially freezing it shut. To ensure smooth valve operation, apply heat and insulation to the valve and check regularly to ensure it functions correctly, preventing gas leakage and potential safety risks.

5. Monitor Cylinder Head Water Seals

Due to thermal expansion and contraction, seals used for cooling water can shrink and cause leaks. If conditions allow, activate the cylinder water heater to maintain the water temperature around 30°C. If that’s not possible, it’s best to drain the coolant in advance.

6. Check the Battery Power

Cold temperatures reduce battery performance, which can affect the startup process. Ensure that the battery is fully charged before the winter season. If the generator has dual motors, check each motor individually to ensure proper operation and smooth startup.

5

7. Reduce Fan Operation Frequency

Cold air can pose a challenge for cooling fans. When the air temperature drops, the intake of -20°C air can lower the temperature of the generator bearings and internal components, potentially causing damage. Consider reducing the frequency of fan operation or even turning them off, saving electricity and extending the life of the fans.

6

Winter is not only a challenge for gas generator systems but also presents an opportunity. Lower temperatures can reduce the power consumption of cooling fans, leading to greater operational efficiency and stability. By following these preventive measures and taking appropriate steps, your generator will be prepared for the cold season, ensuring improved performance and longevity during winter operations.
